What Is a Broom Finish, and What Are Its Benefits?

The broom finish technique creates a texture that looks like a broom has been brushed across the surface of your concrete.

Here are a few reasons people love broom finished concrete:

  • Its slip-resistant surface brings peace of mind to homeowners and commercial property owners.
  • The texture creates a beautifully designed surface that is subtle enough to blend with the style of any outdoor space.
  • It’s one of the most reasonably priced options when it comes to getting a decorative concrete surface.

Can Broom Finish Be Applied to an Existing Surface?

Yes, the broom finish technique can be applied to an existing concrete slab as well as new surfaces. At SUNDEK of Houston, we use a coating called SunRestore over the top of concrete, and then apply a broom finish texture to that. The result is a surface that looks brand-new.

For this residence, SUNDEK of Houston installed SunRestore with Broom Finish for the outdoor patio, creating a great-looking surface for homeowners to hang out with friends and family.

Can SunRestore Be Used on Damaged Concrete?

Yes, in addition to using SunRestore on newly poured concrete, we can also use it on existing concrete slabs. As long as the damage to your existing surface is fairly minor and the integrity of the surface isn’t compromised, we can use SunRestore on it. First, we’ll patch cracks and resolve other issues such as chipping or spalling, then we’ll coat the surface and texture it.

Where Can Broom Finish Be Applied?

We can use our SunRestore and broom finish system on just about any area on a property:

  • Driveway
  • Patio
  • Porch
  • Retaining wall
  • Sidewalk
  • Stair
  • …and more.

How To Create a Broom Finish

Here’s a quick overview of how we install SunRestore with broom finish on an existing surface:

  1. Thoroughly clean the concrete. By completely cleaning the existing surface, removing all debris including dirt and other products, we make sure it’s ready to accept the new coating of SunRestore.
  2. Etch or grind the surface. In order for the SunRestore coating to adhere properly, we etch or grind the existing concrete to create the correct surface profile and completely rid the surface of all previous sealers, paints, and other materials that might interfere with resurfacing.
  3. Repair damaged spots. Before applying the new coating, we address cracking, chips, and any other damage.
  4. Apply primer & SunRestore. We evenly apply a primer to the surface using a sprayer or roller. Then, when the surface is ready, we apply SunRestore.
  5. Add texture. Running a concrete broom across the surface strategically, we add the broom finish texture.
  6. Add any details. At this point, we add joints by grinding or cutting.
  7. Protect with sealer. When the surface is ready for it, we apply a high-quality sealer to protect the concrete from wear and tear and staining.

Can I Apply the Broom Finish Technique Myself?

Yes, it is possible to apply the broom finish technique on your own, but we highly recommend working with a contractor who has experience doing this type of work. Keep in mind that SunRestore, a SUNDEK product, is only sold to authorized SUNDEK installers, so it’s not something available to private homeowners or property owners.

By working with an experienced contractor such as SUNDEK of Houston, you get a contractor who knows the ins and outs of creating a broom finish. Though the result is a simple texture, getting it is not as easy as it appears. Just like any job, there are potential pitfalls that experienced contractors are aware of. Additionally, working with a local contractor also ensures that you have someone working on your project who is familiar with what types of weather conditions are best (and worst) to do this type of work in.
