Artistic Butterfly Pool Deck Coating in Cypress
At Longwing Landing, a community pool area at Bridgeland in Cypress, TX, SUNDEK of Houston brought a butterfly pool design to life.With an ambitious project in mind, Taran Jensvold of SWA Group reached out to SUNDEK of Houston. Taran described the vision for Longwing Landing, a community pool area at Bridgeland in Cypress, Texas: a pool in the shape of a butterfly. Could SUNDEK install a pool deck coating that would complement the butterfly shape, making it look as if the deck itself were an extension of the butterfly wings? With SUNDEK’s creativity and propensity for taking on a challenge, the answer was a resounding “yes.”

He sent along pictures of some previous work that put their talents on display: for example, a splash pad with a surface designed to resemble a jigsaw puzzle, with each piece a different color. Images of past projects demonstrated their ability to make curves, use multiple colors, and make complex, artistic designs a reality on concrete. SWA and project manager Jason Chovanec of Rosenberger Construction hired SUNDEK of Houston to bring the butterfly pool deck to life.
For the deck, SUNDEK used Classic Texture in three colors: Tweed Gray, Smoke Gray, and Oyster White.

After securing the project, the team at SUNDEK of Houston got to work. They planned to use varying shades of gray to create a subtle yet gorgeous pattern that would mimic the look of butterfly wings. Steve and his team selecting the perfect tones that would help the desired effect. They settled on a combination of Tweed Gray and Smoke Gray. Oyster White would also be used to make the finer details stand out.
The deck would be visually stunning, but also important to the client was its longevity and durability. To provide the community with a deck that would last for many years to come, SUNDEK of Houston proposed the Classic Texture, a high-performance coating that is SUNDEK’s own knockdown texture product. Classic Texture is slip resistant, ensuring safety around the pool area. Additionally, its non-porous acrylic finish prevents dirt, oils, and chemicals from penetrating the surface, making the deck easy to clean and maintain.

In addition to the butterfly deck, SUNDEK would also resurface adjoining areas, including the deck around an adjoining lap pool and wading pool. In total, the team would resurface about 16,665 square feet.

The SUNDEK team mocked up various sizes of circles to get just the right pattern to mimic the look of a butterfly.
Before putting anything down, SUNDEK of Houston’s team created a mockup on site. This 6- by 6-foot concrete slab allowed the crew and client to visualize the final product before making it permanent. The mockup displayed the circles in different sizes, and showed the colors so that the client could see how the wing patterns would look on the deck. “When the owners came by to see the mockup, they were over the moon,” recalls Steve.
Like any large-scale project, the job was not without its challenges. Several delays occurred, from securing permits to getting utilities like water and electricity turned on. There was damage to some trees that had to be addressed before SUNDEK could begin their work. Despite these obstacles, SUNDEK of Houston crews remained focused and professional, adjusting their schedule and condensing their timeline to ensure that the project could still be completed on time.
Delays did not hinder the quality of the work—the finished results were breathtaking. The pool deck exceeded client expectations, perfectly capturing the unique vision they had in mind.
