Crosby Splash Pad Provides a Bright Hangout Spot for Residents

SUNDEK of Houston installed a beautiful 1,700 square-foot splash pad with custom colors for this community in a small Houston suburb.

Architects for Pecan Estates reached out to SUNDEK of Houston to make their unique vision for this splash pad come to life.

When architects designed Pecan Estates, a master-planned development in Crosby, Texas, about 30 minutes out of Houston, they included plenty of spaces for community members to gather. In addition to walking trails and parks, they wanted to provide a spot for kids to cool off on hot summer days: a splash pad. After creating their unique design for the 1,700 square-foot splash pad, architects reached out to SUNDEK of Houston to make it happen.

It’s no surprise architects reached out to SUNDEK. “We do a lot of elaborate splash pads, and we’re kind of known for that in Houston,” says Jonathan Bullion, general manager at SUNDEK of Houston. (See their work at the Sawmill splash pad.) For this project at Pecan Estates, SUNDEK proposed using Classic Texture. This acrylic, water-based knockdown texture coating is widely preferred by architects, commercial property builders, and homeowners for its many benefits.

Using Classic Texture as the surface for the splash pad ensures comfort, durability, and easy maintenance for many years. For the design, the architect had specific colors from Sherwin Williams in mind and SUNDEK of Houston was able to match them: Confident Yellow, Red Ray, Jolly Green, and Resolute Blue.

Its varying texture makes the surface comfortable to walk on with bare feet, even on hot summer days. The surface profile also means it doesn’t get slippery when wet—a key feature for a splash pad where kids of all ages will be running around. Another major benefit is that because the surface is non-porous, it prevents things like dirt, oils, and chemicals from penetrating the surface, resulting in easier maintenance.

The splash pad is one piece of the larger picture for this master-planned community: a series of walking paths, parks, and other spaces for community members to enjoy the outdoors.

After receiving the design, Jonathan Bullion, general manager at SUNDEK of Houston, sent the specs for the flowers to a company they use to create vinyl stencils. For the stems, SUNDEK crews laid those out freehand. For this design, crews mixed custom colors based on Sherwin Williams colors: Red Bay for the flower centers, Confident Yellow for petals, Jolly Green for stems and leaves, and resolute blue for the background colors. Colors, integrated into a Finish Coat, were applied on top of the Classic Texture coating.

Despite several challenges that came up while they worked on the project—bad weather and no water available at the site for a few weeks—SUNDEK of Houston crews worked diligently and efficiently to do their part in just about 3 days in total. The result: a cheerful splash pad for the community that residents can enjoy for many years to come.
